Fish Habitat Enhancement Project

Annually, LMRA volunteers assist Alabama Power with their Fish Habitat Enhancement program, sinking recycled Christmas trees in various locations in Lake Martin. In March 2011, the location was the lake waters near the Real Island area.  APCO has a system, refined over many trips, that works really well.  The first truck arrived at the boat ramp and unloads 12-inch concrete blocks at the water's edge. A second truck brings  in the trees and a third truck arrives with a rig to unload the trees.

Volunteers begin to tie the trees in bundles of four and attached a float to one tree in each bundle. Volunteers then load the work boat with five tree bundles with three blocks tied to each bundle. The loaded boat then proceeds to preselected locations where the five bundles (20 trees) are pushed into the water and the GPS coordinates are marked. With one work boat the whole process is completed in about five hours. When this process is completed, fishermen now have new sites to look for the big one. Alabama Power posts Fish Habitat Enhancement GPS Coordinates for APCO Reservoirs at: http://www.alabamapower.com/fishdata

LMRA is pleased to work with Alabama Power to improve fishing on Lake Martin.  We thank Alabama Power for their efforts and the LMRA volunteers who assist.
